Subho Bijoya and Durga Puja wishes

Subho Bijoya (শুভ বিজয়া) is the greeting Bengalis exchange after the goddess is immersed on Bijoya Dashami, the last day of Durga Puja, which falls on Wednesday 21 October 2026. Younger people touch elders' feet in pranam, friends and equals embrace in kolakuli, and everyone shares sweets; today the greeting also travels by call, message and post. Below are original wishes in Bengali, English and Hindi, plus Sharodiya greetings for before the puja.

Subho Bijoya (শুভ বিজয়া, "auspicious victory") is what Bengalis say to each other once the goddess has been immersed on Bijoya Dashami, the final day of Durga Puja. In 2026 that is Wednesday 21 October. The greeting is bittersweet: it celebrates Durga's victory over Mahishasura and also says goodbye until she returns next year. All the wishes on this page were written for Pujo Parikrama; copy and share them freely.
The Bijoya custom
Bijoya is not just a phrase; it comes with gestures, food and visits. Customs differ by family, but these are widely shared:
- Pranam. Younger people touch the feet of elders, and the elders bless them, often with a hand on the head.
- Kolakuli. Friends, cousins and equals embrace, traditionally three times, alternating shoulders.
- Mishti. Sweets are everywhere: rosogolla, sandesh, narkel naru (coconut balls) and nimki (savoury crackers) are offered to every visitor. See our page on Durga Puja food.
- Visits. In the days after Dashami people visit relatives and neighbours they owe a Bijoya call, and some families keep this up for weeks.
- Letters and calls. Older generations wrote Bijoyar chithi, Bijoya letters, to relatives far away, often addressed to elders with a pranam at the top. Today the same greeting goes by phone, video call and message.
Before all this, married women take part in sindoor khela and boron, bidding the goddess farewell; read more on the Dashami and Sindoor Khela pages. As the immersion procession leaves, crowds traditionally shout "Asche bochhor abar hobe!" (আসছে বছর আবার হবে, "it will happen again next year").

Tips for sending wishes
- Say Subho Bijoya only after the immersion; before that, use Sharodiya shubhechha or "Happy Durga Puja".
- For an elder, add pranam; to a younger person, ashirbad (blessings) or bhalobasha (love).
- A call or a visit with a box of sweets still means more than a forwarded image.
